Just askin'

Do you pay your family when they babysit for you? please feel free to share.

  1. We never paid your grandma or your aunt that I remember. But a younger sister should probably be compensated. I think the rule is: If you have more money than they do, pay them, especially if they are a starving single person. :-)

  2. I have to agree with Daddy up there...
BUT...I also think that family would and should step up and not expect to be paid and be there whenever needed (as schedules allowed).
    But thats just me...

  3. I offered numerous times to pay my sisters and sisters-in-law. They've always turned it down. We decided it would be best to try to pay them. Then at least they couldn't whine later about how we never did give them any money for watching Davy.

  4. I couldn't have put it better with HUMMERBOB.
If it's your parents, I don't think you should pay them. Maybe treat them to a dinner or something if/when ya'll go out.
That's my only thought on this.

  5. What I want to know is when your Dad learned those cute computer faces? :-p
When paying your babysitter/younger sister, remember all those times you worked for me for $15-$20/hr. stuffing envelopes. . . .

  6. LOL, and it was $10 and hour, and i am a dang good envelope stuffer!

And yeah, I don't mind paying the poor destitute sister (I would do it anyways), just wondered if it should be mandatory (like expected), or a nice surprise at the end of the night!

  7. Not that I was suggesting you pay the babysitter $10/hour. And I also bought hot apple carmel cider and lunch, lol.

  8. Honestly, I don't usually play my sister when she watches my kids. But I also pick her up from school and take her home everyday. So we've kind of decided that we pay each other by helping one another out.

  9. mmmm, I love that hot caramel apple cider, and don't forget treats form that bakery...yummy! Seems like the general thinking is pay in some way or another, but I do still believe that it shouldn't be expected. More of an extra bonus at least where family is concerned.

  10. Hi I'm Sarah's little sister.. I have my sister in law babysit a lot. But we trade. There's never any paying just trading services. One sister in law does our pictures for free, and another I've babysat her kids about the same amount. But i think it depends on the family member..?

  11. I don't pay my sissy's most of the time, but I'm sure they know they can ask me for anything and i'd do it for them, as best as I can. If I'm asking for a sitter frequently than I would probably pay them something, or take them to do something. Besides I'm giving them the pleasure of spending quality time with their favorite neice and nephew. JK :).

  12. I don't pay my family members, but I guess I've never thought about it. My sister is like a 2nd mom to our boys, she loves them nearly as much as we do, and would never accept "payment" for her help. Not to mention, she knows how much we are spending on school loans.

My parents would probably pay me to let them watch my kids. They feel lucky that we are living by them.

Doing something nice every once in awhile I think is a great wya to show them how much you appreciate them. I always tell my sister "When you have kids, even if we don't live close, I will fly out at a moments notice to help if you are ever in need."

  13. I think it totally depends on the situation. Like with your sister, I would. But Ashley usually gets us pizza or something when we babysit, so we figure that covers it. Once in a while, she'll slip in a few bucks at the end. But I don't think it's mandatory, unless it's like a younger niece or something.

  14. It's been a long time since I had family babysit. But, when I did I tried to pay if I could. I think it also depends on the situation. Like Kelli said, I try to have good food, dessert, or I will give money for Blockbuster.
